Here is the title page:Īlthough he didn’t claim to be the first to come up with the techniques in the Ars Magna, Cardano was the first to publish a compilation of the known methods for solving polynomial equations up through degree four. It was actually the tenth in a series of volumes Cardano wrote for a work he called Opus Perfectum, or The Perfect Work. Cardano’s Ars Magna, published in 1545, is often considered the start of a comprehensive theory for solving algebraic equations.
